Assistant/Associate Mathematical Modelling on Nuclear
Decommissioning
School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering
Closing date: 08/01/2008 Reference: EPS/229/07
Applications are invited for the post of Research
Assistant/Associate in the new Nuclear Decommissioning
Engineering Research Group at the School of Mechanical,
Aerospace and Civil Engineering. The project to date has
generated an algorithm which captures the sequence and logic of
decommissioning activities on all types of nuclear facilities at
the end of their operating life. Its scope extends from this
point up to the beginning of the Interim Storage of all the
wastes generated by the decommissioning process. The aim of this
post is to assist in converting this new algorithm into a simple
mathematical simulation of the decommissioning process,
initially on the Sellafield site but with the intention of
possible scaling the model up to assess the national and even
international situation. The outcome of the research would be of
value to both the academic community and the nuclear industry as
it will simulate how decommissioning is likely to proceed, where
bottlenecks are likely to occur, the quantities and timings of
waste arising and so on. It is the intention when this phase is
completed to develop the algorithm further into a learning
Expert system covering past lessons learned and virtual
simulations of real decommissioning projects via a type of
conversational interface. This would then be made available to
real world decommissioning teams. The person appointed will be
responsible for designing the simulation and running it on real
data in collaboration with the experts at Sellafield. 'What-if'
scenario modelling is expected to be a significant feature of
this model if it can be successfully realised. Applicants
should have, or be about to obtain a PhD in either Engineering
or the Physical Sciences and be able to demonstrate a good level
of research experience in the area of simulation of industrial
processes. Experience in nuclear waste management and
decommissioning would be highly advantageous. This post is
funded by the University of Manchester and the Nuclear
Decommissioning Authority and will be available immediately for
a period of 36 months.
